"Sicao Dazhong Temple" is located at the southern tip of Beishanwei Island in the Taiwan Strait. The site of the temple was originally a desolate and isolated island, but today, the once barren land of Taijiang has now merged with the city. The deity worshiped at "Sicao Dazhong Temple" is not Cheng Cheng-kung (Koxinga), but his vanguard general, 'Chen You'. 'Chen You' annihilated over three hundred Dutch soldiers during the battle at Beishanwei Island, and to honor his achievements, a temple was built in the 39th year of the Kangxi Emperor’s reign to celebrate his military contributions, and he was posthumously titled 'Zhenhai Yuan Shuai' (Marshal of the Sea). The main deity of "Sicao Dazhong Temple" is 'Zhenhai Yuan Shuai', named Chen You, a native Taiwanese. He grew up by the coastal waters and was not only familiar with water management but also possessed great strength, earning the nickname "Ox Cart You." During the Qianlong period, due to false accusations by corrupt officials, he became despondent and swallowed gold in despair, eventually committing suicide by drowning in the sea. When he died, a storm raged and the sky darkened, yet his body miraculously stood upright in the water, drifting to the shore of what is now "Sicao Dazhong Temple." Upon learning of this, Emperor Qianlong deeply admired his loyalty and posthumously conferred upon him the title 'Zhenhai Yuan Shuai' and ordered him to be worshiped in the Dazhong Temple. The temple has a history of over two hundred years, and its incense offerings are prosperous with divine power spreading far and wide. In 1971, human bones were discovered near the temple, including the remains of Dutch soldiers. To honor the fallen, the Tainan City Government erected the 'Cheng Cheng-kung Opening Taiwan Battlefield Memorial' and the 'Dutch Soldiers’ Tomb' to commemorate the Dutch who died far from home. Nearby "Sicao Battery" and other historical sites attract many tourists, especially on holidays. The area is also part of the 'Taijiang National Park', where visitors can take bamboo rafts through the 'Mangrove Green Tunnel'. Here, you can see many fiddler crabs and mudskippers inhabiting the water's edge. The scenery is breathtaking, making it a wonderful destination for an enriching ecological journey or a family-friendly outing.
