Located in Anping, Jianshi Square is a place where local traditions blend with artistic flair. It is also the "habitat" of the famous Sword Lions. Established on August 21, 2004, the square highlights a unique cultural symbol of Anping homes — the Sword Lion, which serves as a traditional guardian against evil spirits.
The lion’s expression and the direction of the sword it holds in its mouth each carry different meanings: a sword facing left symbolizes blessings, a sword facing right is used to ward off evil, and holding two swords represents protection from misfortune.
Inside Jianshi Square, you’ll find several themed halls:
- The Sword Lion Pavilion – Learn about the origin and cultural significance of the Sword Lion.
- The Fan Pavilion – The only fan-themed exhibition in Taiwan, promoting eco-friendly fan culture with a variety of fans on display.
- The Toy Pavilion – A nostalgic space featuring old-school Taiwanese toys like Sword Lion pogs, shell toys, marbles, and kaleidoscopes, offering joy for all ages.
After some fun, visitors can relax under the ancient banyan trees at the garden café, sipping on drinks, enjoying shaved ice, or tasting local traditional snacks.
Throughout the square, you’ll spot many adorable and creative Sword Lion designs — such as a Sword Lion licking a lollipop or one sipping coffee. A wide range of Sword Lion-themed souvenirs is also available for purchase. Come join the fun and experience the charm of these cultural guardians!
