The Nanying Astronomical Education Park is located at Erxi Gongshan in Danei District, Tainan City. Situated on undulating hilly terrain, the park’s layout follows the natural slopes and features three main astronomy-themed buildings along with various outdoor facilities. The architecture is harmoniously integrated with the surrounding environment, making full use of the area’s geographical advantages to create a high-quality nature-based astronomy education park. The development was planned in stages: from 2004 to 2006, the former Tainan County Government funded the construction of the Astronomical Observatory, which officially opened on January 1, 2007. Due to budget limitations, subsequent constructions were made possible through a NT$600 million grant from the Executive Yuan's Council for Economic Planning and Development and the Ministry of Education. From 2008 onwards, the Astronomical Exhibition Hall, Planetarium, scenic platforms, and a mountain-circling trail were added, with the main facilities completed by 2012. (1) Highlight 1: Full-Dome 3D Planetarium Theater — This theater features the world's latest "full-dome 3D imaging" digital planetarium system, the first of its kind in Taiwan. Inside the dome, audiences are immersed in a 360-degree virtual reality star field. With professional guided narration, visitors can transcend time and space to experience the awe of the cosmos, sparking their interest in astronomy and science. (2) Highlight 2: Telescope Observation Experience — The domed observatory, with a diameter of 9 meters, has a gem-like exterior based on a carbon-60 structure, resembling a sparkling jewel atop the Danei hills and serving as a prominent park landmark. Inside is Taiwan’s largest ground-level astronomical telescope with a 76 cm primary mirror. Additional telescopes, such as the BRC250 and MEADE-12, are housed in the flat-roof observatory. Visitors can observe sunspots during the day and participate in night-sky observation every Saturday to view stunning planets, distant nebulae, and star clusters—truly a breathtaking cosmic experience. (3) Highlight 3: Rich Natural Scenery — The park offers vast views, with scenic platforms, circular hiking trails, stargazing decks, and a sundial plaza. From here, visitors can overlook the meandering Zengwen River, river terraces, and the Erchongxi settlement. On clear days, views extend to Yushan, Taiwan’s tallest peak. The trails are designed with minimal ecological disturbance, preserving habitats for endemic plants such as Begonia ravenii. Native vegetation is maintained along the path, allowing visitors and local residents to enjoy and learn about the diverse ecosystems surrounding them. (4) Highlight 4: Night Sky Stargazing Tours — The Astronomical Observatory stays open until 9:00 PM every Saturday, offering telescope observation and guided stargazing on the viewing platform. Thanks to its low light pollution, the park is an ideal stargazing location and the only observatory in Taiwan that provides regular nighttime sky tours. Here, visitors can rekindle their childhood dream of touching the stars, making Danei truly a "hometown of the stars."
