Introduction

The Taiwan Sugar Corporation Rende Sugar Factory is a traditional sugar refinery with deep historical roots. Looking back at the history of Taiwan's sugar industry, its origins can be traced as far back as the 17th century during the Dutch colonial period. The industry was further developed during the era of Koxinga and expanded under Japanese rule with the establishment of the "Taiwan Sugar Manufacturing Company." Over time, sugar production became a major force in Taiwan’s export economy. It’s clear that traditional sugar factories once played a vital role in the island’s economic development. However, with the passage of time, these old-style sugar factories have gradually declined. In recent years, thanks to the efforts of dedicated artists and cultural groups, the Rende Sugar Factory has undergone a transformation into a vibrant hub for arts and culture. When visiting this hidden gem just ten minutes from downtown Tainan, you’ll not only catch a nostalgic whiff of sugar in the air, but also embark on a rich and inspiring cultural journey.
