During the Qing Dynasty, a street gradually formed between Gongchen Gate (the North Gate of Taiwan City) and Heliao Port. It was originally called Guokengzi Street. Since the Taiwan General Military Headquarters (Zongzhen Office) was established to the north of this street, directly facing it, the name was changed to Zongye Street during the Kangxi era. Zongye Street was connected with Yunxiao Street, Gongjian (Bow and Arrow) Street, and Zhao'an Street, forming a major passageway leading into the walled city of Taiwan through Gongchen Gate. Over time, Zongye Street evolved into a bustling commercial area filled with various shops and businesses. It was once famously described as having “ninety thousand and twenty-seven thousand,” symbolizing its prosperity and wealth. After the beginning of Japanese rule, urban reform projects led to the construction of new roads in the area. As a result, Zongye Street gradually lost its significance and became a small street within the urban layout. Today, it is known as Chong’an Street.
