Caoshan Moon World in Zuozhen District features a bluish-grey terrain formed by sandstone and shale, known as marl. It is geologically connected to the badlands of Neimen, Tianliao, and Yanchao Districts in Kaohsiung City, collectively referred to as "chalk landforms." Due to the soft nature of the soil and erosion caused by rivers such as the Caoshan River and Ganglin River, the landscape is carved into jagged ridges and steep cliffs, with rugged terrain stretching across the area. The alkaline nature of the marl makes it difficult for vegetation to grow, resulting in a barren land where only drought-resistant thorny bamboo manages to survive.
