The former Tainan County Governor's Residence was the official residence of the governor of Tainan County during the Japanese colonial period. The governor was the head of a first-level administrative region in Japan, known as a "prefecture." From 1900 to November 1901, the county governor was Imai Gen'ichi, who began constructing the "Tainan County Governor's Residence" as the official residence for the prefectural head. After the abolishment of the state and the reorganization into a district in 1901, the residence of the Tainan district head was relocated to the nearby "Tainan District Governor's Residence." The original Tainan County Governor's Residence was then repurposed as the "Tainan Governor's Residence" for the governor during his visits to Tainan, and also served as the "Imperial Guesthouse (official residence)" for the royal family during their visits to Tainan.
