The Yanping Street Ancient Well is a freshwater well in Tamsui, dating back to the Ming Dynasty, specifically the sixth year of the Chongzhen era (1633 AD). It was dug to provide a reliable and abundant water source, and its sweet-tasting water was highly valued by the locals. During dry seasons, people didn’t have to worry about a lack of water, making the well an essential resource for the community. In fact, wells like this were a necessity for early immigrant settlements and gradually became important landmarks. It wasn't until the 12th year of the Republic of China (1923) when tap water became available that the well saw less use. In the 12th year of the Republic of China, residents began using the abandoned well water to cultivate bean sprouts, which turned out to be fresh, tasty, and profitable. This practice made the "Bean Sprout Well" in the city widely known and became a local trend. After Taiwan's recovery, the well was no longer used for drinking but for washing purposes. However, visitors can still come here to witness the historical significance and take photos with the well, which has been a companion to the local residents for many years, serving as a living testament to the past.
