Yongcheng Theater, located in Yanshuei District, Tainan, was originally established in 1945. Its predecessor was the Yongcheng Rice Mill, operated by Mr. Huang Zhi (黃直先生) During the Japanese colonial period, the rice mill thrived due to its cooperative relationship with the Japanese government. However, after World War II and the withdrawal of the Japanese, the mill suffered significant losses. Consequently, Mr. Huang transformed the facility into a theater.
Post-renovation, the theater became a gathering place for politicians, businessmen, and celebrities in the Yanshuei area. It showcased movies and occasionally hosted theater troupes, making it the largest theater in the region at the time. However, due to changing times, Yongcheng Theater ceased operations in 2000. The Tainan City Government later undertook renovations, preserving features like the stage curtain, cypress long benches, and old movie projectors. During festivals, the theater screens classic films, and it also serves as a venue for performances like Taiwanese opera and puppet shows. Additionally, film-related art installations are displayed outside the theater.
