Yamakami Living(Homestay)

Introduction

Yamakami Living is a homestay located at No. 1-121, Dazhuang, Xinzhuang Village, Shanshang District, Tainan City. Originally established in 1961 by Mr. Yang Bingcai, the property functioned as a tapioca starch factory, utilizing techniques imparted by Japanese engineers. Many local residents aged between 60 and 70, as well as those in their 40s and 50s, recall the factory's heyday.

In an effort to diversify, the factory ventured into soda production but was unable to compete with larger enterprises like San Fu Chemical Co., leading to its decline. The Yang family subsequently relocated to northern Taiwan for approximately 40 years. The estate, encompassing a 670-ping (approximately 2,215 square meters) courtyard, has been preserved by the third-generation descendant, Mr. Yang Jiahua, a retired instructor from Xinying High School. The architecture is a blend of Southern Min and Japanese styles, featuring a traditional three-section compound.

Since 2022, Shanshang Bieyuan has served as a filming location for various productions, including the Tainan Cultural Affairs Bureau's promotional film "Home as Theater," for project “Art to District”, and the 2024 graduation project "WTF GRANPA!" by Kun Shan University students, and a student film by I-Shou University at the end of 2024.

Its authentic architecture provides an ideal backdrop for depicting early Taiwanese society
