Introduction

"Burning Oyster Shell Ash" is a long-standing traditional industry in the Tainan area. The term "oyster ash" refers to a filling material used by the Han people to connect houses and boats. It is made by mixing "oyster ash" with "sugar water" and "glutinous rice juice," which strengthens the structure of houses and makes wooden boats durable. However, due to the competition from modern lime industries, the oyster ash kilns gradually disappeared, leaving only the Anping Oyster Ash Kiln preserved. Therefore, the Tainan City Government planned it into the "Anping Oyster Ash Kiln Cultural Center," using images and text to introduce the history of the oyster ash kiln. Volunteers also provide on-site tours, explaining the history from oyster farming to the oyster ash kiln. The "Anping Oyster Ash Kiln Cultural Center" consists of the main oyster ash kiln building and warehouse. The center displays the tools used for burning oysters in the past and features scientific exhibits and applications of oyster ash. It is a small yet exquisite cultural center. The exterior of the "Anping Oyster Ash Kiln Cultural Center" is square on the outside but round on the inside. The structure is very unique, made of red bricks to support the weight of the kiln. The inner diameter is approximately four meters, with a height of about two meters. The thickness of the kiln walls is at least one meter in the thinnest places. Although the oyster ash kiln industry has gradually faded into history due to industrial transformation, with the efforts of the city government and volunteer groups, the "Anping Oyster Ash Kiln Cultural Center" has transformed into a place that integrates culture, tourism, and education. It regularly hosts activities such as volunteer tour guide training, ecological tours of the city, and book clubs to pass on "oyster ash culture" like a flowing stream. The "Anping Oyster Ash Kiln Cultural Center" currently focuses on community industry, combines the natural field, and promotes ecological teaching, local cultural tourism, and learning passports. It is a great place for outdoor education or family fun and learning.
