The Southern South

Data Published:2021-12-14

A story from the southern Taiwan region, buried for 70 years.

"Can a canary that has forgotten how to sing recover its lost song?"

The Southern South uses a youthful student romance to introduce the 1940s "Self-Defense Corps of KSHS" incident.

On the southern coast, young male and female students set off fireworks and while away their youth in the warm sea breeze and sunlight; in the woods, they share a daydream, dancing a carefree duet; the scene shifts back to the Japanese-style school campus, where armed male students prepare under the cover of night to participate in the resistance, while tears of reluctance well up in the eyes of female students.

Director LI, Shang-Chiao's The Southern South delves into themes of memory, love, and resistance, beginning with the innocent romance between male and female students of Kaohsiung High School, and touching upon the "Self-Defense Corps of KSHS" in the 228 incident.
