The Chingshui Gate was built during the Qing Dynasty's Qianlong period by a Taiwanese magistrate named Jiang Yuan-shu. Later, when the city walls were rebuilt using earth, a smaller west gate was constructed nearby and named Jingbo Gate. During the Republic of China period, due to road expansion plans, the small west gate was scheduled for demolition. However, National Cheng Kung University offered to preserve it, and it was relocated to the Kuang-Fu Campus. Unfortunately, during the relocation, the gatehouse and archway were installed in reverse, and this configuration remains today. Inside the site are two cannons—one from the Daoguang period and the other from the Tongzhi era—making this a must-visit site when touring Cheng Kung University. Jingbo Gate was one of the 14 gates of the Qing Dynasty's Fucheng and the last among the main eight city gates to be restored. The gate features a single-eaved hip-and-gable (Xieshan) brick structure. A Xieshan roof is known for its nine ridges—one main ridge, four vertical ridges, and four diagonal ridges—hence the nickname "nine-ridge roof." The gate's name, "Jingbo," which translates to "pacifying waves," was chosen in hopes of calming the waters. At the time, Fucheng had many waterways and was close to the sea, so smooth sailing conditions were essential for cargo ships.
