Introduction

The red-colored Tainan Confucian Temple, surrounded by lush greenery, appears majestic under the bright blue sky. Through the careful efforts of Tainan's people, the temple is not only a landmark but also a symbol of the cultural spirit of Tainan. Built in the 19th year of the Yongli era (1665) during the Ming Dynasty, Tainan Confucian Temple is the oldest Confucian temple in Taiwan. It is also the most historically significant and grandest Confucian temple in Taiwan, with a solemn and magnificent architectural layout. Classified as a national first-class historic site, it is also the place where Taiwan held its first Confucius worship ceremony. Although Confucian temples across Taiwan hold similar ceremonies annually, none compare to the historical significance of the ceremony at Tainan Confucian Temple. The temple still largely retains its traditional "Left School, Right Temple" structure, with the educational complex represented by the Minglun Hall on the left and the main temple, Dacheng Hall, in the center on the right. However, many of the surrounding walls have deteriorated over time, causing slight differences in the original spatial structure.

The most remarkable feature of the temple is the Dacheng Hall in the center, which is unique because it does not have columns or a corridor, but instead relies on the thick exterior walls and beams for support, showcasing an extraordinary example of ancient Chinese architecture. The temple enshrines the statue of Confucius, while the east and west chambers honor other ancient sages and virtuous figures. With over 320 years of history, the temple has endured several rounds of destruction, yet it remains one of the best-preserved cultural relics in Taiwan. Restoration work began in 1985 and was completed after four years, giving us the current structure of the temple. At the entrance corner, the "Confucian Temple Management Committee" is in place to oversee the maintenance of the temple and the promotion of cultural activities.

The area surrounding the Confucian Temple has also developed into a well-known coffee and light meal district in Tainan. Centered around Nanmen Road and extending to Jianye Street, Shulin Street, Nanning Street, and Wufei Street, it has evolved from the early Nanmen Garden to a lively commercial area, each shop offering unique delicacies that attract food lovers. It is worth spending a leisurely holiday here, soaking in the ancient and cultural ambiance, and then visiting a coffee shop to enjoy a meal or a coffee while experiencing the rich literary atmosphere.
