The Zhongdao Chongwen(Respecting Principle and Venerating Literature) Archway, established during the Jiaqing era of the Qing Dynasty, was erected to honor Tainan local Lin Zhao-ying for his charitable contributions to the construction of an academy. In traditional society, stone archways were built to commend individuals exhibiting loyalty, filial piety, benevolence, or righteousness. The Zhongdao Chongwen Archway is one of the four remaining Qing Dynasty stone archways and is designated as a Level 3 historic monument.
The archway is a square stone structure made of bluestone, white marble, and granite, standing 594 cm tall and 683 cm wide. A stone plaque atop the archway bears the inscription "Zhongdao Chongwen," with a horizontal inscription below detailing the date, official titles, and the person who commissioned the archway. Surrounding the archway are four stone pillars, each flanked by pairs of stone lions intricately carved with male and female features.
Over the years, the archway has undergone several restorations and relocations due to urban development. It was eventually reassembled in Tainan Park. In 1992, slight tilting of the pillars was discovered, posing a risk of collapse, prompting emergency repairs to preserve this valuable monument.
