Introduction

The "Eternal Golden Castle," designated as a national first-class historical monument, originates from the 'Mudanshe Incident'. After the Japanese forces invaded Taiwan, Shen Baozhen requested the imperial court to construct a Western-style cannon fort, making it Taiwan's first Western-style fort. Shen Baozhen also inscribed the words "Eternal Golden Castle" on the main entrance gate. Since the construction site was on a sandbar, obtaining and transporting materials was very difficult. It is said that many of the bricks used came from the already damaged "Anping Fort". The "Eternal Golden Castle" covers an area of over 3 hectares and is a Western-style "bastion" fort with a square structure. Upon crossing the bridge, visitors enter a semicircular gate with the inscription "Eternal Golden Castle," and on the back, it reads "The Pillar of Ten Thousand Streams," which carries significant meaning. The entire structure has protruding corners and a concave center, surrounded by a moat. Large Western cannons are placed around the fort, with both large and small cannons on the fortifications. The central area of the fort was used for training, and the architecture is grand and well-constructed. With its powerful cannons, the "Eternal Golden Castle" serves as an important milestone in the history of Taiwan's southern and northern fortifications. Currently a first-class historical monument, the "Eternal Golden Castle" has a surrounding wall about 2 meters high, with a moat encircling it and dense trees around the area. The round-arched gate, made of red bricks, stands 5 meters tall. Passing through the arch, the inner area is covered with lush green grass and is very flat and spacious. The "Eternal Golden Castle" is also a great recreational area, with swan boats floating on the water, providing a peaceful and enjoyable experience. The park features a statue of Shen Baozhen, a cannon for photo opportunities, and a 100th Anniversary Monument. It is a must-visit attraction for tourists in Tainan.
