Introduction

Backer Memorial Park was once a garbage dump filled with weeds and waste. It was later revitalized by the local village leader Mr. Li Ren-ci, who, along with many volunteers, worked to transform this abandoned space into a park. Today, Backer Memorial Park stands as one of Tainan's rare green parks. Its rebirth not only provided the local residents with a place to rest but also created a great venue for events. The park has hosted numerous activities, such as the Glow-in-the-Dark Butterfly Release, music concerts, and ecological tours. These events have brought the public closer to the park and its significance. The park is dedicated to Dr. Backer, a Scottish electrical engineer born in Glasgow in 1849. In 1875, he came to Taiwan and founded Tainan Theological Seminary, Taiwan’s first university. He translated the Christian Bible into Taiwanese Romanized script and promoted the use of Romanized spelling and vernacular Chinese characters. Dr. Backer also introduced modern printing techniques from England and helped establish the Taiwan Church Press, publishing Taiwan's first newspaper, "Taiwan Fucheng Church News." When Taiwan was ceded to Japan after China’s defeat in the First Sino-Japanese War, Japanese forces marched toward Tainan. Local officials, fearing for the safety of the people, requested Dr. Backer to meet with the Japanese military commander and negotiate a peaceful entry into the city to avoid harm to the civilians. Dr. Backer dedicated his life to missionary work and played a crucial role in protecting Tainan from war. He passed away in 1935, and his body was buried in Tainan’s Christian cemetery. To honor his contributions, this park was established as a memorial.
