Introduction

Deji Trading House (British Deji Trading House) was built in the 6th year of the Qing Dynasty Tongzhi period (1867 AD), measuring 20 yards long and 12 yards wide, located in the Haidou Village of Anping at the time. The term "Trading House" refers to a foreign commercial office established by foreign businesses in Taiwan. Its main business involved the export of sugar and camphor. This period coincided with the rise of Western-style buildings in China, and it, along with the later-established Yiji, Heji, Dongxing, and Laiji, formed the five major trading houses of Anping. After Japan took control of Taiwan, it was converted into the "Dai Nippon Salt Industry Company Office." In 1945, it became the "Tainan Salt Fields Office," and later, it was used as a dormitory for the Tainan Salt Fields. In 1981, it was renovated into the "Taiwan Development History Wax Museum." The building faces north and is three stories high. The main staircase is located at the center of the front, with the first floor originally used as dormitories for the employees. The hallway is centered with three rooms on each side. The building is surrounded by arcades on the east, west, and south sides. The second-floor layout is similar to the first floor but with green-glazed ceramic railings around the corridor and white plastered walls, giving it a completely different appearance from traditional Anping homes. The roof is a truss system covered with tiles, divided into two sections, each with a four-pitched slope for drainage. In general, Westerners built houses in Taiwan with arcades to protect against rain and sunlight, making the arcade an important architectural feature. Deji Trading House is a prime example and serves as a historical witness to trade between the East and West at the time. It is currently listed as a Level 3 historic site in Tainan City.
