Established during the Guangxu period of the Qing Dynasty, the Tung Hsing Trading Company primarily engaged in the export of camphor and sugar, as well as the agency of ship transport. It was once part of the "Five Major Trading Houses of Anping," alongside British firms Yee Kee, Ho Kee, Tak Kee, and American firm Lai Kee. In 1986, it was transformed into the "Anping Foreign Trade Memorial Hall," showcasing the brief history of Anping's foreign trade and related industries. The Tung Hsing Trading Company has a unique architectural style. Upon entering the courtyard, visitors can see an arched doorway built from red bricks, exuding an antique charm. The raised foundation of the building helps prevent the floor from becoming damp due to changes in climate. After Westerners arrived in Taiwan, they painted the outer walls of the two outermost rooms white and added shutters to the windows to block direct sunlight. Thus, Tung Hsing Trading Company can be said to be a perfect blend of traditional local materials and Western architectural design ideas, maintaining local flavors while incorporating strong foreign influences. The exhibits inside the trading house are also very rich. In addition to recording the development of Taiwan's foreign trade and sugar industry, it also features rare items such as fireplaces and chimneys, which are seldom seen in Taiwan. These are fascinating to observe and definitely worth taking a closer look. Moreover, Tung Hsing Trading Company, in addition to its historical significance, is also a popular spot for photographers! It is recommended to spend a leisurely afternoon sitting in the corridor under the arch and relaxing. Every weekend, there are live band performances here!
