Introduction

The Dutch built Taiwan's first fortress, "Fort Zeelandia," in Anping in 1624, which is now known as Anping Fort. It was continuously expanded and developed, becoming the center of Dutch rule and the main hub for foreign trade. In the 16th year of the Ming Yongli era, Koxinga (Zheng Chenggong) drove the Dutch out, renaming the area Anping and Taiwan as Ping'an Town, while Chihkan Tower became Cheng Tian Fu. Fort Zeelandia became the residence of the Zheng family, and it was also known as the "King's City" or "Taiwan City," the first fortress in Taiwan, marking the beginning of Taiwan's city names. During the Qing Kangxi period, Taiwan was incorporated into the Qing Empire, and the political center shifted to Tainan, causing Taiwan City to gradually lose its military significance. The original structure consisted of a square inner city and a rectangular outer city. During the construction of the Yizai Golden City by Shen Baozhen, part of the Taiwan City wall was dismantled and used in the construction. During the Japanese colonial period, the inner city’s Dutch-style buildings were completely destroyed, and after several reconstructions, it became the memorial hall we see today. After World War II, it was renamed Anping Fort and became a national historic site and tourist attraction. Currently, remnants of the outer city’s southern wall, which is over seventy meters long, still stand beside the memorial hall. With old banyan trees climbing over the walls and the red brick walls showing signs of aging, these are the only remaining historical relics from over 300 years ago, telling the story of the past's trials and tribulations.
