Introduction

God of Wind(Fong Shen)Temple, located near the intersection of Minquan Road Section 3 and Kangle Street in Tainan City, was established in the 4th year of Emperor Qianlong's reign during the Qing Dynasty (1739). Originally, the temple was quite expansive, but during the Japanese occupation, parts were demolished to make way for new roads, leaving only a small temple that stands today. It is the only temple in Taiwan dedicated to the Wind God. Unlike many other temples adorned with lavish decorations, Fong Shen Temple has a modest exterior, lacking elaborate carvings or images on its roof; the interior is also simple and traditional. Despite its unassuming appearance, the temple holds significant artistic value and continues to attract many worshippers. The main deity enshrined is the Wind God, accompanied by unique statues of the Water God and Fire God, one painted blue and the other red. Additionally, the Thunder God is enshrined on the left and the Lightning Goddess on the right, creating a solemn and respectful atmosphere. The temple was originally built to seek divine protection for the safe passage of ships traveling between Taiwan and Xiamen. Due to its unique purpose, it was regarded as one of the eight major temples of Taiwan during the Qing Dynasty. Although it has undergone destruction and subsequent restoration, and its scale is now smaller, Fong Shen Temple remains a must-visit site for devotees and tourists alike.
