Introduction

Established in the early Ming Yongli period, the Kaiji Wu Temple is the oldest temple in Taiwan dedicated to the worship of Lord Guan (Guandi). Due to its modest size, it is also known as the "Small Guandi Temple." Located in the West Central District of Tainan City, the temple was originally the bell tower of Prince Ningjing’s residence. After the Qing Dynasty took over, it was converted into a temple and is now classified as a Level 3 Historic Monument. The nearby Xinmei Street in front of the temple earned the nickname "Divination Alley" because many fortune tellers set up stalls there, attracting a continuous stream of visitors seeking divinations and blessings. The temple has a relatively narrow and elongated layout, consisting of the Main Hall, the Sanchuan Hall (front hall), and a corridor over a water channel. The rear hall was recently dismantled during renovation. The main deity worshipped is Lord Guan, with unique enshrinement of Marshal Ma and the Tiger Lord. These deities are placed in a small shrine on the right wall of the Sanchuan Hall — a space-saving arrangement due to the limited area of the temple grounds. Notably, the main doors are adorned with large protruding rivets instead of traditional door gods, a design permitted only in temples recognized by imperial decree, such as Confucian or martial temples. For most visitors, coming to the temple is about seeking peace, spiritual comfort, and inner clarity. Within the time-honored Kaiji Wu Temple, one can find many signs of the people's deep reverence for Lord Guan. Therefore, we recommend a journey of spiritual purification — an experience sure to bring you new insights and blessings unlike any before.
