Introduction

Zhuqi Temple, originally known as Xiaoxi Tian Temple, was established during the Ming Yongli period. It was renamed Zhuqi Temple during the Qing Dynasty and is located next to the South Creek in Tainan. In the past, many bamboo trees were planted to the west of the temple, and the local people referred to it as Zhuqi (Bamboo Creek), thus renaming Xiaoxi Tian Temple to Zhuqi Temple. Zhuqi Temple is the first Buddhist temple in Taiwan and can be considered a holy place for Taiwanese Buddhism. It is one of the "Four Great Ancient Temples" of Tainan, along with Kaiyuan Temple, Amito Temple, and Falian Temple. The surroundings of Zhuqi Temple are beautiful, with mountains and water. There is a suspension bridge across the creek leading to the opposite bank, where flowers bloom and bamboo forests thrive, creating a peaceful and refreshing atmosphere. It is one of the "Twelve Scenic Views of the City" known as 'Zhuqi Mist and Rain'. Zhuqi Temple is very old and has undergone several renovations. The current appearance combines both Eastern and Western architectural styles, making it quite distinctive. In front of the temple, there are two red stone lions and a large white elephant. On both sides of the temple's archway, two generals are enshrined. Moving forward, the main hall, which is two stories high, is the Daxiong Hall, where three large Buddha statues are enshrined. In the center, there is a plaque that reads 'Liǎo Rán Shìjiè' ('A Clear World'), which is one of the three major plaques of Tainan, along with the plaques 'Yi' from the Tian Tan and 'Er Lai Liao' from the Taiwan Fucheng City God Temple. With such beautiful surroundings and rich historical heritage, it is highly recommended to visit this temple on weekends.
