The Fucheng Great Guanyin Pavilion is said to have been built in the 23rd year of the Yongli era during the Ming Dynasty, making it the earliest Guanyin temple in Tainan. In addition to worshiping Guanyin Bodhisattva, it also venerates the Great Sage Equal to Heaven (Sun Wukong) and the Old Man Under the Moon (Yue Xia Lao Ren). It is said that among the temples in Tainan that worship Yue Xia Lao Ren, the Fucheng Great Guanyin Pavilion is the most effective. People seeking good marriage prospects often go to the statue of Yue Xia Lao Ren to throw divination cups. After receiving a favorable cup, they pick a red thread from the one draped on the statue and keep it safe. It is believed that if the red thread is missing the next day, it signifies that someone of the opposite sex encountered in the following one or two days could be their soulmate. In addition to offering prayers to Guanyin Bodhisattva, the Great Sage Equal to Heaven, and Yue Xia Lao Ren, the pavilion also worships the Eighteen Arhats, the Three Jewels Buddha, and the Great Sage. The main architectural feature of the Great Guanyin Pavilion is the "baoxia" style of the prayer pavilion in front of the main hall, which is different from typical structures, hence the name "pavilion." Furthermore, many of the stone and wood works in the temple are ancient relics from several renovations, such as the ceremonial trays, lattices, wood carvings, and stone carvings. The Great Guanyin Pavilion houses many important cultural relics, especially the statues of deities created during the Ming Dynasty Yongli era, which are considered the most precious. For example, the gold embellishments on the side of the Guanyin Bodhisattva statue appear particularly solemn and dignified. Additionally, the temple still preserves ancient plaques and numerous couplets. Notably, the wooden plaque couplets inscribed by Prince Shaobao Wang Delu in front of the deity's niche read: 'The moon shines, pearls and ornaments glow, the fragrance of meditation fills the space, golden waves surge, the precious net of Buddha saves and transcends life from the river of love.' This couplet is one of the finest works. The Great Guanyin Pavilion in Fucheng not only preserves ancient architectural relics but also the masterpieces left by famous figures of the past. Visiting here allows one to appreciate the unique historical architecture and the poetic charm of ancient renowned figures.
