Introduction

The Xingji Temple, located in Tainan City, is a temple dedicated to the medical deity, Baosheng Dadi (the Great Emperor of Healing). Next to Xingji Temple is another temple dedicated to Guanyin Bodhisattva. Although the two temples are affiliated with Buddhism and Taoism respectively, they have been situated side by side since their establishment and share a close relationship. They are also managed by the same organization. Today, people commonly refer to both temples together as the "Da Guanyin Pavilion Xingji Temple."

Xingji Temple was established during the period of the Dutch and Zheng rule and is the oldest Dadao Gong Temple in Taiwan. It is primarily dedicated to Baosheng Dadi, who, according to legend, was known for his exceptional medical skills and virtuous character during his lifetime. After his transcendence, he was revered as a deity capable of curing all illnesses. During the Qing Dynasty, due to the Mudan Incident, an imperial envoy was sent to Taiwan for enforcement. The soldiers, plagued by diseases in the remote mountains, prayed to Baosheng Dadi for health and safety. As a result, the imperial envoy visited the temple on the 1st and 15th of every month and arranged seasonal rituals, thus bringing great prosperity to the temple. It became one of the most lively temples in the city of Tainan. To this day, there are stories of people visiting the temple to seek healing via medicinal divination. It is said that those who pray for a medicinal divination at the temple can be cured. The temple currently divides the divinations into internal medicine, surgery, ophthalmology, and pediatrics.
