Introduction

In 1661, Koxinga (Zheng Chenggong) led over 400 warships to land at the mouth of the Luerhmen River, driving out the Dutch who had occupied Taiwan, reclaiming Taiwan's territory and establishing Luerhmen's important historical position in Taiwan. The Luerhmen Tianhou Temple was built after Koxinga's landing in Taiwan and has a history of over 300 years. The temple primarily enshrines Mazu, with a statue carved from the rare mainland Xuan Zhi material. The craftsmanship is exquisite, with a solemn Buddhist appearance, and the statue is surrounded by a coiled dragon. The throne also features eight lions in various postures, suggesting the statue is over 800 years old. The temple houses the "Newly Built Luerhmen Public Monument" and the "Reconstruction of Tianhou Temple Monument" from the Qing Dynasty's Xianfeng era, two ancient stone tablets. These serve as the best evidence for the authenticity of the Luerhmen Tianhou Temple. Each year during the lunar new year, the Luerhmen Tianhou Temple holds a cultural festival, attracting thousands of worshippers who come to pray for a safe and prosperous year. Especially on New Year's Eve, people gather to celebrate, eat tangyuan (sweet rice dumplings), light incense, visit the temple for the New Year’s first incense offering, and give out red envelopes (lucky money). Among these activities, the first incense offering is the most eagerly anticipated.
